The Tavern is one of my favourite eating spots in town; you may remember I wrote about their chef’s table a while back which you can read about here.
They do a ‘Burger Monday’ which includes a Butt’s Farm 6oz beef burger served with either French Fries or Shoestring Fries, slaw and a drink for just £10! I’ve been wanting to try it out for ages, but having usually started my healthy eating routine on a Monday morning, it always seems an awful shame to end it so early come Monday evening! So we planned our visit for between Christmas and New Year, that time of year when every day is one big eating fest – even Monday’s!
I booked our table over Twitter, their first ever Twitter booking – so I think that means I’m officially a very modern woman, and they are a thoroughly modern restaurant.
A warm welcome awaited and whilst I waited for my friends to arrive I enjoyed a Tanqueray Gin and tonic at the bar. They have a fabulous range of drinks and cocktails.
We ordered our burgers, two with Ogleshield cheese (made with Jersey milk) and mine with Stichelton cheese (made using raw milk unlike many British blue cheeses). We all had French fries instead of the shoestring fries. I’ve had them before, and they are really tasty, but I prefer something with a bit more body to it, something I can pick up and dunk in my sauce instead of needing to eat with a knife and fork – I’m not ladylike when it comes to eating! We also ordered a side of Fried Potatoes and Aioli – it helps keep the boys away!
You’d think that people would have been fed up of eating a few days after Christmas, but apparently not, so the restaurant was really busy and as a result we did have to wait quite a little while for our food, but the staff kept us updated and were kind enough to offer us a drink on the house too. We had plenty to talk about, so it wasn’t a problem, and when our food did arrive it went down extremely well. The burgers are cooked to medium as standard, they’re so juicy - and substantial too. I loved the blue cheese, especially as I’d managed to get through the whole of Christmas without having any, and by the end of the meal, we all had clean plates and very garlicky breath! Mission accomplished.
For 2016 I’m thinking it might be a wise move to start the whole healthy shebang on a Tuesday morning because it would be such a shame to miss out on ‘Burger Monday’ at The Tavern.
