Local Eat Treats #16 A Very Late Lunch in the Beer Garden of The Gloucester Old Spot

Our visit to The Gloucester Old Spot was not a planned one. You see, we were on the way home from Bristol at lunch-time and had vouchers to spend at Gloucester Services; that was the plan.  But our car conked out on us, and so after two breakdowns, one wait for the RAC, and one very long tow back to Gloucestershire, we asked him to drop us, and our conked-out car in the car park of The Gloucester Old Spot for lunch at 6pm!

We were both hungry, cranky and absolutely shattered, so the evening sunshine and fabulous beer garden were a welcome sight. We didn’t mess around, we went straight to the bar and ordered a Gert Lush cider each and two of the Pulled ‘Old Spot’ Pork Burger’s with BBQ Sauce, Smoked Cheese, Curried Slaw, Brioche Bun and Hand Cut Chips.

I don’t know whether it was the fact that I hadn’t eaten for hours or the talents of the chef, but that was THE best pulled pork ever! It’s well known that too many people have jumped on the pulled-pork bandwagon, and hardly anyone gets it right. But The Gloucester Old Spot have got it spot on! The ‘dressings’ of BBQ sauce, smoked cheese and curried slaw finished it off perfectly. I would have never thought of putting cheese with pork, but it worked oh so well!

Kingsley will tell you, I didn’t care about table manners when I ate that burger. I had curried slaw and BBQ sauce all down my hands and face, but I was too hungry to give a hoot!

Huge thanks for filling my very hungry tummy!

  1. Sooooooooooooooo, did you manage to get that all into your mouth in one bite? Simon always laughs at me when I eat burgers cos I used a knife and fork!

    1. Well maybe not all at once, but I gave it a good go ;-) I'm not as polite as you using a knife and fork, I just end up in a mess!
